Robert Broom, son of Bobby and Glenda Broom of Rising Fawn, is looking good to take major-league baseball by storm in short order, says a publicist for the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in Massachusetts, where young Broom distinguished himself as a pitcher this summer.

“He is a right-hander with an usual sidewinder delivery,” writes Carol Dumas of Regan Communications in Osterville, Mass.: She outlined Broom’s accomplishments at the Cape Cod collegiate summer program: “1-1 record; pitched in 11 games, 20 innings, struck out 25, only giving up three walks, two runs... and he had three saves. I believe he left before the finals, but his contributions were key to his team reaching the championship. They knocked off the two best teams in the league to get there and he played in all those games.”

Broom did not attend Dade schools but was a star athlete at Gordon Lee High School. He now attends Mercer University in Macon, Ga.

The Cape Cod League, a nonprofit, volunteer-run baseball organization that is now 132 years old, is considered by many a steppingstone to the major leagues. It can currently boast 297 players in the majors.

During the Cape Cod summer program, players like young Broom live with host families and besides playing baseball swim in the Atlantic and perform community service such as reading to children at libraries.

Broom is now a sophomore at Mercer, where he is racking up awards pitching for the Bears. "Robert is likely a future 'star of tomorrow,'" concluded Ms. Dumas.
