Election 2018 Already Off to Lively Start

2018 is expected to be a hot and heavy election year nationally, but in Dade County it already looks nuclear. Today is day one of qualification week for local elections and already the field is crowded.

Two county commission seats are up for grabs this year and nobody will run unopposed for them. The District 1 (north Dade) seat to be vacated this year by Mitchell Smith is sought by Jane Dixon running as a Republican and Patrick Hickey running as a Democrat.

Incumbent Scottie Pittman (right) has announced his intention to seek reelection for his District 2 (Sand Mountain) county commission seat. Already he is challenged by Warren Johnson and Michael Scott (pictured above), both running as Republicans.

Moving on to board of education seats, hardware store proprietor Daniel Case will challenge incumbent Cindy Shaw (left) for her District 1 seat on the school board, running as a Republican, and so will Ronald Baldwin running as a Democrat. Ms. Shaw also qualified today as a Republican.

The District 2 school board seat currently held by Jennifer Hartline is also up for election this year. So far, no one has qualified for that one.

Candidates have until noon Friday to fill out their paperwork and pay their qualifying fees at the Dade Board of Elections office in the county Administrative Building.

The last day to register to vote in the May primary election is April 24. Early voting begins on April 30, and the primary is May 22.

Editor's Note: Candidates, The Dade Planet will be delighted to help you share your candidacy. If you have not already done so, please send your announcement to news@dadeplanet.com. A photograph is appreciated but not required. Thanks!
