Preliminary Reports on Highway 136 East Weekend Accidents

The remains of a tractor-trailer truck that crashed on 136 East Thursday night are removed on Saturday. The GSP reports the driver was fine in this one.

Cpl. Andrew Gideon of the Georgia State Patrol reported Sunday morning on weekend wrecks on Highway 136 East up Lookout Mountain in Dade County:

The fearsome charred remains of a tractor-trailer on the south side of the roadway, depicted above as it appeared Saturday around 12:30 p.m., were the result of an accident at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, said the trooper. A semi truck was coming west down the mountain a little too fast to negotiate the curve, went into the eastbound lane, crashed through the guardrail and caught fire. But the driver escaped the accident without significant injuries, and since the wreck was not blocking traffic, and since the semi had to be taken away in pieces, the burned-out hulk was left for cleanup until Saturday morning.

Cpl. Gideon believed the truck to have been hauling a heavy load of household appliances.

Another wreck--or actually two, as they were treated by the Georgia State Patrol--happened on 136 East Saturday evening. Gideon said he believed the accident was around 5:30 p.m.

The first incident happened when a pickup truck coming down the mountain struck and disabled a Honda vehicle. Gideon said two people were inside that vehicle--a man and a woman, he believed--and both were transported to the hospital for their injuries.

The second accident happened when the pickup truck that struck them continued some distance down the mountain, then crashed itself, overturning. Gideon said only one person was occupying the pickup truck and that this person was injured badly enough to be airlifted to Erlanger. The extent of the injuries is not yet known, he said, and there may in fact be a fatality.

Given those circumstances, the trooper could not yet say whether there would be charges brought against the pickup driver for leaving the scene of the initial accident.
