Dan O. Hall, 88, died at his Wildwood home Saturday, June 11, 2016. He was sole commissioner of Dade County for 16 years.
Hall's terms as Dade's sole commissioner were during the 1960s and ‘70s and he prided himself on the miles of roads in the county he got paved. When he took office, he said, most of Dade was still dirt. He lost the sole commissioner seat to Larry Moore in the contentious and turbulent election of 1980.
The former commissioner once owned and operated the Rising Fawn Water System, later forming the Dade County Water Authority. It was on his watch that the Dade County Industrial Park and Burkhalter Gap Road were built. He formed the first Dade County ambulance service and brought Primary Health Care Center to the county
Hall was born and raised in Rising Fawn and attended Rising Fawn Elementary School before graduating from Berry School in Rome, Ga. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Navy’s Seabees. He enlisted in 1944 and did not leave the Navy until 1950.
He was a past president of the Dade County Lions Club and the local Jaycees as well as a past commander of American Legion Post 106. He was a member of Trenton Masonic Lodge 179 A&FM and of the Alhambra Shrine Temple.
Hall was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lora Hale Hall.Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Bettye Hixson Hall of Wildwood; children, Candy (Dale) Robertson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Cindy Shaw and Danny Hall of Wildwood; grandchildren, Eric Robertson, Tiffany Collins, Seth Houts, Danielle Houts, Samantha Shaw, Daniel Hall and Samuel Hall; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday June 14, at Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton, with Rev. John Smith and Rev. Mickey Schrimshire officiating. Hall will be laid to rest in Trenton Baptist Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from noon until 8 p.m. on Monday and from noon until the service on Tuesday.
