National Park Photo Contest at the Library

July 28, 2016

Summer Reading ended with a bang last Thursday with a visit from comedic juggler Todd Key.  We gave away a lot of prizes and said goodbye to Tasha Denton with no less than three cakes.

We would like to thank all our sponsors for making this a successful summer for our kids:  Lake Region Medical, Citizen’s Bank, Sharp’s Auto Sales, Dade County Foster and Adoptive Parent Association, Friends of the Library, Sonic, Dollywood, Lake Winnepesaukah, McDonald’s, Krystal, Hardee’s, and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.  Because of their help, we were able to offer our kids two months of FREE programs.

We would also like to thank all our volunteers who helped out with shelving books, giving out prizes, setting up and cleaning up, and whatever else needed.  Thanks to the Chattanooga Zoo for bringing a program to us and for Amanda Henslee and Bonnie Cayce for volunteering their time for a Kids’ Yoga program.

After a couple of weeks off, our Children’s Ready-to-Read program will resume on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 10:30 a.m.  We’ll have more information on that later.  I’ve had people ask about how old a child should be before coming to the Ready-to-Read programs.  My suggestion is to bring them and see how it goes.  If he or she doesn’t seem to be ready, just wait a few months and try again.  We usually divide children into two groups, older and younger, to make it more age appropriate.  Besides reading and learning activities, kids also do crafts in this program

August 2016 is the 100th anniversary of America’s National Parks.  We will be doing several things to help celebrate this event.  We will have displays of pictures from our national parks as well as books and maps and other items.  Our manager, Marshana Sharp, loves to have contests, so we are going to have a National Park photo contest.  If you have a great picture taken in one of America’s national parks, bring in a 5x7 photo with your name and phone number and the name of the national park where it was taken.  These will also be on display and a winner will be announced on August 30.  On August 30, we will also have a slide show and program about the National Parks at the library.  Bring us your pictures!  Do you know which National Park has the most visitors?  Tune in to this column next week and find out!

Join us on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 3-7 p.m. for scrapbooking and cardmaking.  You can drop in whenever it is convenient in that time period and, if you like, bring materials for trading.

Also on Aug. 9, at 5:30 p.m., we will have an Adult Coloring Class.  You may use markers, watercolors, colored pencils, gel pens or crayons to brighten your life.  Use all of these mediums to create a vibrant world of color for fun and relaxation.  This session will be led by Lynda Nelson.
